The academic Baroque style and Neoclassicism were the dominant aesthetics in the 18th century. The architect Joan Soler i Faneca adapted military Neoclassical architecture to suit civil works. Other notable figures are the painters Antoni Viladomat and Josep Flaugier, and the sculptor Damià Campmeny. Jaume Caresmar and Antoni de Capmany made important contributions in the field of history. The pedagogue Baldiri Riexac revitalised Catalan primary education and defended the teaching of the Catalan language in the face of the dominance of Spanish in official circles, culture and the press.
