Military Engineers and Surgeons

The Military Academy of Mathematics was set up in Barcelona in 1720 and trained military engineers and civil master builders. Military engineers were involved in public works and built the district of Barceloneta and the town of Sant Carles de la Ràpita, the highway between Barcelona and Vilafranca, the bridges at Molins de Rei and El Lladoner, and the castle of Sant Ferran de Figueres. Civil medicine also benefited from the founding in 1760 of the College of Surgery in Barcelona, which was set up set up to train surgeons for the army. Distinguished doctors who provided the training included Pere Virgili and Antoni Gimbernat.
