Under the influence of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, Modernista sculptors produced idealistic, spiritual works loaded with symbolism. In 1890, Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol initiated a new pictorial style characterised by the predominance of stylised lines and by themes inspired by nature or social criticism. They were followed by a second generation of painters who included amongst their number Isidre Nonell, Joaquim Mir, Anglada i Camasara and the young Pablo Ruíz Picasso. Posters were not only the paradigm of advertising at the time, but also became works of art.
