Rebellions, Revolutions and Reforms
Riots and Republicanism

Between 1835 and 1843, craftsmen, the petty bourgeoisie and the emerging working class supported Republicanism and expressed their democratic demands through spontaneous riots, In July 1835, news of a Carlist victory at Reus led the populace in Barcelona and elsewhere to burn monasteries and convents. In August 1835, a mob killed General Bassa and set fire to the Bonaplata factory. In November 1842, there was a popular uprising against Espartero, and the army bombarded Barcelona from Montjuïc. The revolt against city taxes lasted from September 1843 to January 1844.
