The bourgeoisie in Catalonia was the only one to have interests in industry in Spain, but was marginalised in the implementation of reforms. There was also a clash of interests with the financial bourgeoisie of Madrid, the landowners in the south of the Peninsula and the mercantile bourgeoisie in port cities, all of whom were indifferent to industrialisation. With the support of the working class, Catalan manufacturers, linked from 1844 with the moderate party, pressed for protectionist economic measures that would reduce the competition of products from Britain and other European countries.
