The textile, and especially the cotton, industry spread in two areas. The steam-powered factories fired by coal, which had to be imported and was expensive, were in El Maresme, El Vallès Occidental, El Garraf, El Camp de Tarragona and El Baix Camp. New companies set up along the rivers to combine water power and steam. The basins of the Ter and Llobregat rivers, and of the Cardener and Anoia rivers became new industrial heartlands, of which the model industrial villages were an outstanding feature. Such model settlements were built where a sufficient head of water could be obtained and consisted of a factory, housing for the workers and various other buildings providing services to the community.
