The Era of the Railways

The building of a railway network brought about a revolution in transport and required vast sums of capital. The railway line between Barcelona and Mataró, the first in the Peninsula, opened in 1848. The basic lines in the Catalan network were laid between 1856 and 1865. The crisis in 1866 brought further construction to a halt until 1875, when work began again. Barcelona was the centre of a railway network that headed in four different directions: to Zaragoza via Manresa and Lleida; to France along two routes one along the coast and the other along a track inland; to Tarragona via Vilafranca del Penedès; and to Sant Joan de les Abadesses.
