Steam Industrialisation
The First Steam-Powered Factories in the Barcelona Plain

In 1833, the Vapor Bonaplata mill in Barcelona introduced steam machinery into the textile industry. Steam-powered factories immediately began to spring up everywhere. Coal was transported with ease to the port and in a few years factories had filled the available space. Industrial expansion continued to affect Barcelona as military ordinances prohibited building at less than the range of a cannon from the walls. By the end of the 1840s, there was the Vapor Vell and Espanya Industrial in Sants, the steam-powered factories of Puigmartí and Vilaregut in Gràcia, and the Vapor del Fil and La Cotonera in Sant Andreu de Palomar.
