The industrialisation of the textile sector and the revolution in transport spurred on local manufacturing of steam-powered machinery. In 1836, the Nuevo Vulcano workshops in Barcelona built the first steamship in Catalonia and Spain. In 1850, the Alexander brothers, from Scotland, set up a foundry in Barceloneta, and in 1855, La Maquinista Terrestre i Marítima was founded, the first major Catalan engineering company. The iron and steel industry grew due to the new demand for tools, machinery and other equipment.
