The success of industrialisation reached a peak and was unable to advance further due to a number of basic weaknesses. Catalonia had no raw materials or energy sources and so depended on imports. This dependence on the outside world also affected technology and capitalisation. The market in Spain, which had not undergone the agricultural revolution experienced in Catalonia in the previous century, was weak and inflexible. Central government policy was linked to large-scale commercial interests and thus was in favour of free trade. Despite these difficulties, the industrial fabric of Catalonia became firmly established.
