Urban Transformation
Urban Services and Amenities

The workings of the new, modern city entailed the need for new services and amenities to be set up. In Barcelona, Pere Garcia Faria designed a sewerage system to ensure proper drainage of waste water, though the local councils, run by petty tyrants, did not apply it in full. Gas lighting in streets was installed. The firemen were equipped with their first steam pump and their first fire engine. The first trams began to operate. Mains water supply was installed in many homes. Similar progress took place in the other large towns and cities in Catalonia.
