Homes underwent major changes during the 1960s. Coal-fuelled cookers were replaced by bottled gas or mains gas cookers. Gas bottles were also used for heaters, which gradually took over from oil stoves. New materials, such as chipboard and Formica, revolutionised furniture making. The flood of new domestic appliances continued unabated, and residents' comfort was dramatically improved by electric fridges, washing machines, dishwashers, radios and televisions. Catalan homes had begun to move from self sufficiency into the consumer society.
