There was a veritable revolution in the media in the 1960s, years that were characterised by burgeoning numbers of radio stations, the widespread use of transistor radios, the timid provision of news, and in particular the appearance of television. Televisión Española began broadcasting in Madrid in 1956. Television reached Catalonia in 1959 when the new transmitter on Tibidabo and the Miramar studios on Montjuïc started operating.
