Defeat and Recovery
Opposition to Franco
Workers, Students and Residents

The workers' movement reorganised in major companies by establishing new forms of trade unions. In 1962, the Central Workers' Commission was set up in Barcelona. The Christian-inspired syndicalist movement (USO) was also active. The old unions (the CNT and the UGT) were unable to rebuild themselves solidly until after Franco's death. The students' movement was very active from 1956 onwards. The Democratic Student's Union of the University of Barcelona was set up in 1966. In 1974, the Barcelona Federation of Residents' Associations was constituted.
