On the Edge of the Empire.
Counter-Referomation and the Baroque
From the Renaissance to the Baroque

The leading figures of Renaissance art include the architect Pere Blai, who designed the facade of the Palau de la Generalitat (the seat of the Government of Catalonia), and Damià Forment, who sculpted the high altarpiece at Poblet. The Baroque painter Francesc Ribalta, originally from El Solsonès but who settled in Valencia, was a master of the technique of Tenebrism. The dissemination of Medieval literary classics by means of the printing press, the absence of patrons and the rise of Castilian literature during the Golden Age explain the limited output of high Catalan literature. Publications of popular literature and of historical, pedagogic, technical and legal works in Catalan flourished.
