In 1610, the Moriscos (Spanish Muslims baptised as Christians) were expelled from Catalonia, as they had been one year earlier from Valencia. The Morisco population was small and concentrated in the areas of the Segre and the Ebre rivers. They were descendants of the original Islamic population and worked the lands of nobles and church institutions. Even though nominally they had been baptised, many of them, men and women alike, remained faithful to Islam and retained their customs and religion. They were expelled to Barbary, embarking from the port of Els Alfacs. In total, 4,180 people were expelled.
