The repression that followed was harsh. General Moragues was executed and quartered, and his head was left hanging in an iron cage above the Portal de Mar gate to Barcelona for 12 years. Part of the La Ribera neighbourhood was demolished to make way for a huge fort, Ciutadella, to control the city. The occupying military regime was confirmed by the Decree of the New Plan (1716). A captain-general was invested with full civil and military power and presided over the Royal Audience. Municipal institutions were abolished and local government was entrusted to mayors and councillors appointed by the king or the captain-general.
