The Reapers' War

The Corpus of Blood

On 7 June, Corpus Christi, in 1640, a minor incident in which a reaper was wounded was the trigger for revolt. Hundreds of farm labourers entered Barcelona and gathered in front of the house of the lieutenant, Count of Santa Coloma. They then sacked houses belonging to royal officials. In the afternoon, news (later shown to be untrue) spread that the third councillor of the city had been shot dead, and the city rose up in response. Three thousand men attacked Les Drassanes; the lieutenant was killed whilst fleeing towards Montjuïc. The uprising held sway throughout the city for three days and spread to Tortosa, Mataró, Vic and Girona.
