Provençal and Latin forms gradually disappeared from literary culture and the use of Catalan became more widespread. Early evidence of this is to be found in history, in the great chronicles of Jaume I, Ramon Muntaner, Bernat Desclot and Pere III, and in the multifaceted work of Ramon Llull. Catalan literature was of exceptional quality in the 15th century. Jordi de Sant Jordi, Joan Roís de Corella and Ausiàs Marc wrote magnificent poetry, while Tirant lo Blanc by Joanot Martorell became a literary model and was a decisive step forward in the establishment of the western European novel.
