Beginning in the 13th century, local science based on broad knowledge of medicine, alchemy, astronomy and astrology developed in the kingdom. Notable figures are the doctor and alchemist Arnau de Vilanova, the doctor Jaume d'Agramunt, the mathematician Levi ben Gersom and the Majorcan cartographers Abraham and Jafuda Cresques. Ramon Llull was a particularly versatile and creative intellectual who demonstrated, through his highly individual oeuvre, his knowledge of fields as diverse as philosophy, science, theology and the writing of literature.
