Jaume I el Conqueridor (1213-1276) began expansion across land and sea at the request of the merchants in the cities along the coast. In September 1229, the fleet set sail and in December occupied Madinya Mayurqa (Palma de Mallorca). In 1231, Minorca began to pay tributes and in 1235, the Pitiuses Islands were conquered. The campaign to take Valencia, in which the Aragonese nobles took part, began in 1233. In 1238, the city of Valencia surrendered, followed by the whole Kingdom of Valencia in 1245. In his will, Jaume I set up the Kingdom of Majorca, to be governed by the house of Barcelona and consisting of the islands, the counties of Roussillon, Cerdanya, Montpelier and Carladès.
