The Mediterranean Adventure

Pere II el Gran continued the policy of expansion across the Mediterranean. The annexing of Sicily began a long political conflict with France and the papacy. The French tried to invade Catalonia but were defeated. During the reign of Jaume II el Just, the Treaty of Anagni and the Peace of Caltabellotta confirmed Catalan and Aragonese control of Sicily. Companies of almogàvers - professional soldiers - went to Byzantium and took the duchies of Athens and Neopatria. Pere III el Cerimoniós assured control of Sardinia and Sicily. Alfonso IV el Magnánimo brought control of the Mediterranean to a peak with the conquest of Naples.
