The Flowering of the Cities
The Catalan Cities

At the end of the 13th century, the population of the Principality peaked at 500,000, a figure it was not to equal again until the 18th century. A quarter of the population lived in towns and cities with more than 1,000 inhabitants. Barcelona, with a population of 40,000, was the largest city, followed by Perpignan, Lleida and Tortosa, which had more than 7,000 inhabitants. Cervera, Vilafranca del Penedès, Manresa, Montblanc, Valls and Berga had populations of between 2,500 and 6,000. Most towns, such as Vic, Tàrrega, Tremp, L'Arboç and La Seu d'Urgell, had between 1,000 and 2,000 inhabitants.
