The Flowering of the Cities
The Organisation of Public Life

Urban growth altered the structure of the towns and cities. New defensive walls were built, providing protection for the new towns. Alongside the new churches and town mansions, huge numbers of residential properties were built in a chaotic fashion, creating a network of narrow, dark labyrinthine streets. Most buildings were occupied by craftsmen, who were grouped in particular streets according to their trade. Cities had public services such as water sources and drains, as well as institutions that provided care, including hospitals and almshouses. Municipal councils endeavoured to regulate urban life under the supervision of the monarchs.
