The Pact, the Basis of Power
The Compromise of Casp

The death of King Martí in 1410, who had no direct descendant, led to a period of political uncertainty (1410-12). The best-placed candidates were Jaume d'Urgell, the lieutenant-general of the kingdom and the great-grandson of Alfons III, and Fernando of Antequera, son of the king of Castile and the grandson of Pere III. Pressure from Pope Benedict XIII and the presence of a belligerent Castilian army in Aragon and Valencia forced a compromise solution: a small committee elected the Castilian candidate as successor to the throne on 24 June 1412. The result of the Compromise of Casp was the granting of the Crown of Aragon to the Castilian dynasty of the House of Trastámara.
