Time of Crisis
Union with Castile

The accession of Fernando II, king consort of Castile, to the throne in 1479 signalled the start of the recovery of the Principality. Although some of his actions, such as setting up the Spanish Inquisition in Catalonia or expelling the Jews (1492), are with hindsight not laudable, Fernando II implemented a valuable policy to promote economic growth and the restoration of the institutions. The 1480-81 Corts of Barcelona recognised all the laws and privileges of the Principality. The crushing of the second Revolt of the Remences and the abolition of serfdom and redemption payments at Guadalupe in 1486 put an end to a long social conflict in the countryside. On his death in 1516, the Crown of Aragon passed to his grandson Carlos I, as Fernando's son by his second marriage with Germaine of Foix had died. Carlos I maintained the federal concept of the dynastic union between Fernando II and Isabel I of Castile.
