The Conquest of Barcelona

In 785, the inhabitants of Girona voluntarily handed their city over to the Franks and in 789, Urgell, Cerdanya, Pallars and Ribagorça followed suit. In 800, an assembly at Toulouse agreed to take Barcelona. The Frankish army was led by Louis le Pieux, the son of Charlemagne, and Guillaume of Toulouse. The siege lasted from the winter of 800 to the spring of 801. The city surrendered on 3 April 801, overcome by hunger. Charlemagne granted a broad charter of liberties to its inhabitants.
