The Organisation of the Counties

Following the conquest, the lands of Old Catalonia were divided into counties, each of which were subdivided into pagi. At the start of the 9th century, the Catalan counties formed six administrative areas: the counties of Pallars-Ribagorça; the counties of Urgell-Cerdanya; the county of Roussillon with its pagus of El Vallespir; the county of Empúries, with the pagus of Peralada; the county of Girona, with its pagus of Besalú; and the county of Barcelona. The dioceses of Elna, Girona, Urgell, Vic and Barcelona were placed under the jurisdiction of the See of Narbonne.
