The work of spreading the word of God was concentrated mainly in the countryside and the Pyrenees. In a largely rural world, parish churches were centres where farming communities gathered together and so contributed towards passing on shared cultural values. Later, the Church also underwent a process of feudalisation. The Gregorian Reform at the end of the 11th century reduced the buying and selling of positions within the Church. The Catalan Church, through the bishoprics, attempted to gain independence from the archbishopric of Narbonne, which it achieved in 1118.
