The Birth of a Nation.
The Power of the Nobles
The Usatges

Up until the 11th century, the county courts were governed by the Visigothic laws contained in the Liber Iudiciorum. The establishment of the feudal system meant that these laws had to be adapted to suit the new socio-political situation. In the 12th century, jurists at the county court drew up a new legal code, the Usatges de Barcelona, a compilation of laws from various legal traditions (Roman and Germanic law together with later customs). Trials by ordeal, in which the guilt or innocence of the accused could be proven by fire, water or combat, were also recognised in the Usatges.
