The invention of the internal combustion engine and the use of electricity in cars, planes, electric locomotives, underground trains and trams led to new growth in the transport sector. The Hispano Suiza company was set up in Barcelona in 1904, the first car manufacturer in Spain, and in 1914, the first car built by Artur Elizalde of the Fábrica Española de Automóviles was on the road. There was a rise in demand for petrol, which had been on sale in Catalonia since 1860, and the first petrol refineries were set up in Barcelona (1868) and Reus (1879). In 1927, the Spanish government created the CAMPSA monopoly.
