On 25 November 1905, hundreds of soldiers attacked the offices of the publications Cu-cut! and La Veu de Catalunya. Around Spain, the assault was supported by a wave of anti-Catalanist feeling. A proposed law that was to put any offence against the army or the unity of Spain under the jurisdiction of the military drew politicians together in a united front: Catalan Solidarity. Its programme had the backing of Carlists, regionalists, republicans and left-wing nationalists. The party's electoral victory put an end to the petty tyrants around Catalonia and made Enric Prat de la Riba president of the Diputació de Barcelona.
