Pompeu Fabra was a distinguished grammarian and lexicographer. It was on his initiative that the Institute of Catalan Studies published Normes ortogràfiques (Spelling Rules) in 1913, followed by Gramàtica catalana (Catalan Grammar) in 1918 and the Diccionari general de la llengua catalana (Dictionary of the Catalan Language) in 1932. It would not have been possible to provide this structure for the language without the support of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya - an association of the provincial councils of Catalonia, making it possible to coordinate their resources - and the determined commitment of its first president, Enric Prat de la Riba.
