On 18 and 19 July 1936, the military insurrection that had begun in Africa spread throughout the garrisons based on the Peninsula, though the results were uneven. The military rebels failed in most of the territory, including the major cities and industrial centres, but they triumphed in Old Castile, Leon, Galicia, Oviedo, Álava, Navarra, Cáceres, western Andalusia, Mallorca and the Pitiuses Islands. In the cities of Catalonia, the public order forces and anarcho-syndicalist militants put a halt to the insurrection.
