Businessmen disappeared during the early days of the revolution. Some were murdered, others fled. The need to re-establish industrial manufacturing led spontaneously to collectivisation and worker control of companies. The Generalitat legalised the process by issuing a decree to this effect on 24 October 1936, and improvised a war industry. Differences of opinion soon emerged and the confrontation of May 1937 left republican forces marginalised.
