Noucentisme was opposed to Modernisme and advocated a return to Mediterranean classicism based on order, good judgement, moderation and civility. The intellectuals supporting Noucentisme were linked to the new institutional framework and supported the cause of "Catalonia City", a social and political initiative taken up by the Regionalist League. They pressed for an ordered country in which urban life eclipsed ruralism. Noucentisme was an important influence in the plastic arts and especially in poetry, noted figures being Josep Carner, Guerau de Liost and Carles Riba. School buildings of the time reflect the impact of the movement on architecture.
