The Institute of Catalan Studies

The Institute of Catalan Studies was the central institution in the Catalan cultural world. It was set up in 1907 at the initiative of the Diputació de Barcelona to "establish here scientific study centres specialising and working not just in education, but in producing science and aiding research." In the following years, the Institute set up its various science departments. The Philology Department, directed by Pompeu Fabra, played a key role in establishing the rules of the Catalan language.
