The Macià Plan was devised to plan the urban growth of Barcelona and involved planners and architects, such as Le Corbusier, from all around the world. The aim was to bring about a profound transformation of the Raval district, to refurbish the blocks of housing in the Eixample, and to build new urban thoroughfares. There was also a proposal for a city in the delta of the Llobregat River where workers could rest and spend their holidays. The GATPAC (Catalan Artists and Technicians Group for Progress in Architecture) also undertook architectural projects of singular modernity. In 1936, the desire for improved balance within the country led to its division into districts and magistracies.
