In the 4th and 5th centuries, the economic importance of cities fell, trade contracted and there was a change in administrative functions and social relations. Cities such as Tarraco, Empúries, Baetulo and Iluro fell into decline. In response to the insecurity and social tension, the wealthy moved to the countryside, where they built self-sufficient villas that became the economic, political and social centres of a broad swathe of land. Some were luxury, complex centres, such as the villa of Centcelles in Constantí, where the remains of the emperor Constans, who died in Gaul in 350, were brought.
